Spring Break Day 3

Every once in a while, we get awesome coaches to join us and today we were honored to have Kena Heffernan, Hawaii-born Punahou (ʻ92) graduate and current U.S. National Sumo Champion, coach our HEATKamp youth on an introductory session of SUMO!  What an experience!

The session started with warmups SUMO-style!  Everyone gathered in a circle and followed his lead. Now we know why sumo wrestlers have such big legs!  They have to do a lot of squatting...and this is only stretching and warm-ups!

Then, we got to experience a few drills.  Dragging your feet in the sand is a lot harder than it might seem!  Keeping your balance is key in this sport.

Finally, we got to set up our own Dohyo and we had our own mini-tournament.  We discovered a few of our HEATKamp youth who might actually have a future in this sport, or something similar.

The best matches of the day were when Coach Kena went up against whichever of the youth wanted to have a go at him!  Now we know why the champion remains the CHAMPION!

We were fortunate that he took the time to spend with us and we are ever so grateful!  Mahalo to his wife, Hoʻoipo, and their 3 keiki for joining in the fun as well!
